Agia Anna

agia anna antoinerenault.comThis place is blessed by the Gods. Close to the amazing Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa, 2nd oldest in Greece. But it is also at the foot of Agia Anna (St. Anne). The most beautiful chapel of Amorgos, immortalized by the movie “The Big Blue”. If you go down the cliff to the right, there is a small fisherman shelter that makes the perfect starting point for a dive. Underwater flat rocks create stunning transparency. The perfect place for a shoot. And inspiration  follows naturally.

This is a constantly moving border. According to where those ripples are, in the sun or the shade ? the wave in the sun or under a shadow ? Depending on wether the side facing the sun or the other. Switching from the sky blue reflections to the sea green transparencies. This graphical sophistication fascinates me. Add some foam hems to spark some mesmerizing whites… and I’m thrilled!

Sailing South

cruising greeceHeat wave. Threading our way between the huge ships in the harbor. The sea already has the exact color I need… Athens hills disappear in our very long wake. Slaloming during hours through all those islands while sun goes down. You have to deserve Amorgos. Beauty commands patience. This is the moment when you get used to it again: just take your time. Time for photography, drawing, and a first slice of Greek sun. Dreaming of a place that will manage to amaze us. Again.

Hair splash

Then comes the moment when you can’t resist it. Blow up the still, the smooth. Turn green reflections into white foam and purple shadows. Draw a perfect circle of spray.

Nice hat!

Coming out of the blue, in yellow, by a late August afternoon. La Clère beach. Hot sun, warm sand. Dip into the water to watch the kids. Running back to the beach, playing with the shore break. Those days, shadows can be beautiful.

Testing waters

Going back to the same place again. That’s fine. Sometimes it can be OK. This pier did not change. A bit more rusty after 2 years. It looks like it does not even care about the scary East wind storms.

levrossos terrasseAt the foot of the coolest restaurant on earth, it keeps on welcoming one or 2 little boats a day during high season. That’s where I took most of the photographs that inspired my 2014 paintings series. Water transparency is sublime. You fake you’re not sure you want to dive again… Let’s face it: you’re not feeling so bad either, on those warm old boards, whitened by the salt. Softly sanded by years of bare foot visitors bringing fresh fish and beer.
